ABB is expanding its marine automation portfolio through the acquisition of Norwegian specialist Høglund, adding integrated vessel control technology used on more than 600 ships to strengthen digitalisation, operational efficiency and supply chain resilience across the maritime sector.

ABB expands marine automation capabilities with Høglund acquisition

ABB has agreed to acquire Norwegian marine automation specialist Høglund AS in a move that strengthens its digital automation offering for the global shipping industry and supports more efficient, connected vessel operations.

The acquisition, expected to complete in the third quarter of 2026 subject to regulatory approvals, will see Høglund integrated into ABB’s Marine & Ports division. The deal includes the company’s operations in Norway, Poland, Romania and China, together with its workforce of more than 80 employees. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rune Braastad, President of ABB’s Marine & Ports division, added: “Høglund’s marine automation portfolio will complement ABB’s existing offering with proven and scalable solutions that support our growth ambitions. Combined with our global reach and service capabilities, we have a great foundation for continued success. We look forward to welcoming Høglund’s highly competent people to join us at ABB.”

Building more connected and efficient maritime supply chains

Høglund’s Integrated Automation System (IAS) is already installed on more than 600 vessels worldwide. Built on ABB’s 800M and S800 control platform, the system integrates automation, monitoring and control across onboard operations, bringing together data from engines, power generation and cargo systems to improve operational visibility, energy efficiency and vessel performance.

For shipping operators, integrated automation plays an increasingly important role in reducing operational complexity, improving asset utilisation and supporting more resilient global supply chains.

Høglund generated revenues of approximately €30 million in 2025.

Supporting digital transformation across global fleets

Following completion of the acquisition, ABB says customers will benefit from its global service network alongside Høglund’s specialist automation expertise, providing broader support for fleet operators as they modernise vessel operations.

Peter Morsbach, Chief Executive Officer of Høglund, said: “This is a significant new chapter for our people and technologies. Høglund’s story is one of dedication and passion for the marine industry, and we are proud of the expertise and experience we have cultivated and the solutions we have built. Our system is based on ABB technology, and we look forward to joining ABB and continuing to advance marine automation for the benefit of customers.”
